Using Excel 2003 - 2.5) How to Load Data from a Text file

Although there are a number of different file extensions (.dat, .fp1, .flu, etc.) for data files saved by in-house written software in the lab, they are all in fact text files, and can all therefore be loaded into Excel in the same way.
  1. Select File and then Open... from the Menu Bar.
  2. In the box next to Files of type: make sure All Files has been selected.
  3. Browse through the drives and directories until you find your data file, which you should double-click on.
  4. The box for Step 1 of the Text Import Wizard should appear. Ensure that the Delimited option has been ticked, then click on Next >.
  5. The box for Step 2 of the Text Import Wizard should now appear. Ensure that the boxes to the left of Tab, Space and Semi-colon (under Delimiters) have been ticked, then click on Finish.
  6. The data from the text file will now be loaded and will appear as a new workbook in Excel.
