A C₃ axis denotes a rotation axis which when viewed along the z-axis shows the bond angle at 120° (360/3 = 120°). E.g. CH₄ which has 4 C₃ axes, looking down any C-H bond, will show you a C₃ axis and so the principle axis can be determined as anyone of these.
